Mission Statement
The American Board of Cardiovascular Critical Care is a free-standing Boards for medical certification.
The purpose of the Board is to establish and improve standards of knowledge and proficiency in the professional practice of Cardiovascular Critical Care. This is accomplished by successful completion of computer-based examinations in the field of Clinical Cardiac physiology, covering ECG, Critical care echocardiography, Pharmacology of common ICU medications, Post cardiac surgery care, Post cardiac surgery complications . The Board grants subspecialty designation and issues a certificate to eligible candidates who have satisfactorily completed the examination.
The Cardiac Critical Care Physicians in the United States as a group are trained for vastly diverse backgrounds including Anesthesiology, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Emergency Medicine and Neurology who undergo further training (fellowship) in Critical care medicine and depending on there background undergo some exposure to one or the other aspects of Cardiac Critical Care, for example an Internal Medicine background trained Physician may have a higher exposure to Medial management of cardiovascular disorders but may have little exposure to post cardiac surgery care, ECMO and other aspects of surgical cardiac care. The same is true for the Anesthesiology/Surgery background trained physicians who have much higher exposure of post surgery critical care but may not have an adequate exposure to the long term aspects of medical critical care. Furthermore, the level of exposure to cardiovascular disorders and their complexities is dependent on the type of expertise available in the training institution.
The purpose of the Board is to establish the basic standards of knowledge and proficiency in the professional practice of Cardiovascular Critical Care by establishing the minimal standards of training followed by the examination, thus certifying physician to have at least a basic minimal knowledge in cardiovascular disorders, their management, common post surgical complications and their management.
This in turn will enhance the safety of patients
